Cradlesong Blog: Sleepy Time

Sleeping
Sophie use to have a wonderful sleep pattern, going to bed around 7pm and waking between 6 and 7am. However, the last month or so this just hasn't been the case. She's been waking a few times a night and difficult to resettle. I think the change has been due to a combination of teething, a small cold and changes to her routine. She's also been waking earlier and earlier for her morning feed until I seemed to be feeding her at 2am. I realised I needed to stop taking the easier option in the bleary eyed night time and try and get her back to a better sleep routine. So I stopped feeding her before 5am over Easter and then the last three nights I have been a bit firmer when she wakes. This has involved me calming her and then putting her back in her cot and leaving the room. Then I've waited outside listening to her cry for attention and she settled back to sleep in less hat 5 minutes the first two nights. Then last night, she slept 11 hours and didn't wake until 6am!! Wonderful!! I guess the key is, that although initially she was waking for a good reason, she had formed the habit of waking for attention in the night. Fingers crossed we're over the worst of it and she'll be sleeping better now, especially as the extra sleep seems to have have a very calming effect on her daytime mood.
