Parenting News: Mother's Day Reminder
|
Sunday 9th May is Mother's Day here in Australia and a number of other
countries including New Zealand, the US and Canada. So this is a gentle
reminder to spoil your Mum on Sunday.
Wikipedia tells me that in Europe there were several long standing
traditions where a specific
Sunday was set aside to honor motherhood and mothers such as Mothering
Sunday.
Mothering Sunday celebrations are part of the liturgical calendar in
several Christian denominations, including Anglicans, and in the
Catholic calendar is marked as Laetare Sunday,
the fourth Sunday in Lent to honour the Virgin Mary and your "mother"
church (the main church of the area). Historians think that children
who served in houses were given a day off on that date so they could
visit their families. The children would pick wild flowers along the
way to place them on the church or to give them to their mothers.
However, if you know anything more about the origins of Mother's Day, I
love to hear more!

Parenting News: Suri Cruise in the News
|
Suri Cruise is often in the news being labelled as precocious, wearing heels, carrying handbags and looking too serious. However, this week she was in the news being criticised for drinking from a baby bottle just a few weeks before her fourth birthday. Personally I think that she is a little old to still be drinking from a baby's bottle, but would be interested to hear other people's thoughts and experiences. I do also think it's not so unusual for a child of her age to still have a bottle at bedtime, especially when they are the oldest and have a younger sibling to copy, or when Mum and Dad just want a quiet evening. Having said that, the advice I was given was to completely remove the bottle from Sophie's routine by the age of 18 months and I think it is quite common to start the transition to a sippy cup at 9 months of even earlier. Sophie is currently 15 months and uses a sippy cup for water during the day and only has a bottle at night time, as I still breast feed her in the morning. Having said that, I'm considering moving her evening milk to a sippy cup as she doesn't use the bottle as a comfort and certainly doesn't relax while drinking it. Quite the opposite in fact, she has her last play for the day while drinking it. Like I said, am interested to her your views and experiences.

Parenting News: Bambino Merino Sale
|
Bambino Merino are moving warehouse and have a stock clearance sale on.
Sophie has two Bambino Merino sleeping bags and she sleeps so soundly
in them, so when I heard about the sale I had to share the news. We got
Sophie her sleeping bags when she was about 5 months old and she has
slept in one every night since. They hardly look worn and she should be
able to wear them until she is two, so we are getting good use out of
them. She has comfortably used them both in the Australian Winter and
Summer (I obviously adjust what she wears underneath). Click here to
see my full review - I fully recommend them.
Go to the Bambino Merino website for more details on their sale.

Parenting News: SIDS Linked to Serotonin Levels in Babies Brainstems
|
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is a relatively uncommon event,
but in babies aged over one month and under one year, it is the leading
cause of infant death in Australia. Unfortunately, there is currently
no clearly defined cause of SIDS and this often makes it especially
difficult for parents to come to terms with the death of their child.
However, recent research carried out at Children's Hospital Boston
supports suggestions that SIDS could be caused by low levels of
serotonin in the brainstem. Serotonin in the brainstem controls many
things including breathing, heart rate, temperature and blood pressure.
When a baby is awake the brainstem works in conjunction with higher
functions in the brain, but these 'switch off' when the baby is
sleeping. This means that if breathing is put under stress, by the baby
sleeping on it's front for example, when a baby would normally wake up
and turn it's head to the side, the brainstem could fail to detect the
problem and fail to act appropriately. At present, serotonin levels
testing can only be carried out postmortem. If a test can be developed
that is suitable for newborns, it could help to identify those babies
who are more at risk of SIDS. This is only half the story though as the
researchers also found that 88 percent of the SIDS cases they examined
had two or more risk factors, such as exposure to cigarette smoke,
illness and sleep position.
All this said, there are very straight forward guidelines that all parents can follow to help prevent SIDS. These are
- Put your baby to sleep on it's back with it's feet at the foot of the cot/bassinet
- Don't have doonas, pillows, bumpers, soft toys, etc. in the cot/bassinet
- Avoid exposing baby to tobacco smoke before and after birth
- Put your baby to sleep in their own safe sleeping environment next to
your bed for the first six to twelve months of their life

Parenting News: New stricter child seat laws
|
This week, the road rules in Victoria relating to child restraints and car seats changed.
Victoria is leading the way in Australia and the world in implementing stricter laws relating to the use of child restraints in an effort to reduce the number of children who are injured each year from not being in a suitable child seat. On average, nearly 300 children under the age of 7 are injured or killed as passengers in vehicles each year, and that's just in Victoria! Given that children up to seven years of age are four times more likely to sustain a head injury in a crash when sitting in an adult seatbelt only, and that children aged four to seven years old in an appropriate booster seat reduce their risk of injury in a crash by almost 60 per cent, these laws are just good common sense.
NSW and Queensland are due to follow Victoria's lead in March 2010 with effectively the same set of laws relating to Child Restraints. Other states are yet to announce dates.
